Kansas
City Revitalization
Facts at a Glance
The following is a snapshot
of the many revitalization projects underway in Kansas City's downtown core, with more exciting projects announced every week. Here are a few facts at a glance:
An unprecedented development boom, funded by the
city itself and its business community, are devoting $3 Billion to revitalize Kansas
City's downtown districts in the next two years.
Cornerstones of the project include a new
entertainment district, professional sports arena and a one-of-a-kind government campus,
all designed to catapult KC into national prominence.
Along with this aggressive infrastructure, urban
residential growth in the area is expected to keep pace bringing in thousands of new KC
residents. New city center jobs and activities
will create the need for new and upgraded housing.
Rather than an underutilized 9 - 5 workplace,
Kansas City's downtown will become a bustling 24 hour destination for multitudes of
residents and visitors from around the midwest.
4,000 new residential units of loft, condominium,
homes, and apartment space have been successfully marketed in the area in the past five
years.
Developers are expected to add 1,500 new
residential units on the market in the next
two years.
The total inventory of multifamily housing now
completed, under construction or in development since 2000 is more than 4,236 units
according to the Downtown Council.
Throughout the urban core, once neglected former
office and industrial buildings are getting a second chance at life as area developers
convert vintage architecture to residential and mixed use projects.
About 15,000 people currently live in downtown
Kansas City, with another 4,000 projected to move downtown by 2007.
